Number one R Packages that Employers will Freak Over:
Shiny! And if you can create an interactive Kmeans clustering plot on a Shiny dashboard, colored by cluster then you will definitely get the job!
Tip for How to Stand Out to Employers:
If you are applying for a role involving predictive modeling, the content learned in the MSBA program may not be enough. If you go to https://www.r-bloggers.com/ and sign up for the newsletter, you can receive daily emails that include step by step instructions for creating more predictive models. Employers love to hear about things you have done outside of class- these quick R-blogger guides don’t take up too much time and they set you apart from your peers!
I just got denied from my 198th company and they flew me across the country and took up half my Spring Break. How can I go on?
5 Pieces of Advice from the Class of 2017.
1: Calm down and breathe! You are not alone. Throughout the 3 years of this program, approximately 67 students have felt the exact same way as you.
2: Remember that exposing yourself to as many interviews as possible is always a good idea. One of these days, a great a company will contact you and all your practice will pay off. The time you spent interviewing with that awesome company was not a total waste!
3: When applying for jobs, it is always a good idea to not plan too far ahead. The saying “don’t measure your drapes before you move in” fits this program to a T. If you apply for a job and make it to the final interview then try your best to let yourself want it too much. This program is too fast and any time spent dwelling on lost opportunities could mean that you miss yet another opportunity. You have to rally!
4: It is always a good idea to sit back and reflect on your mistakes. Perhaps you have been applying only through one channel and you aren’t seeing as many job openings as possible. Or, perhaps you have applied to so many jobs that you have completely lost sight of what your goals are. Remember not to rush and to find a job that best fits you. Employers do not like job hoppers!
5: Know that nothing worthwhile comes easy. What if you just accepted any job? Well, you would be able to check it off your list and enjoy the program. But, remember that your career will last a lot longer than school. By choosing something that may not be a good fit for you then you are shooting yourself in the food. The best things in life come from hard, hard work. When you get that job, it will feel awesome and it will be well-deserved.
Things we wish we would have known from day 1:
1. The Graduate Office has free, unlimited snacks!!
2. Most classes do not actually require the book.
3. Jakki’s class should not be taken lightly!!
4. MustangTrak is not the best for finding jobs. Searching for analytics jobs on company sites or aggregate sites like Indeed is a better options, sometimes.
5. When Moody is full, park in Binkley! On the weekends, park right next to Cox. They don’t check parking passes!
6. If you get a parking ticket, make sure to write a very nice comment for refuting it. If you are too mean they will make you pay it. But if you are nice and pretend like it was a mistake then you are much more likely to get off the hook.
7. Studio Movie Grill gives student discounts!!
Look out for more updates.

ReplyDeleteGreat tips!! R is a must. Don't take any class lightly even some may seem boring. Focus in class, even when you don't understand anything, pretend to focus! as pp said "Fake it till you make it" 😎 by doing so, you'll find yourself breezing through exam revision and any technical interviews.
